Chapter 8

Chapter 8: The Musical Genotype

Summary:

Having now completed the music theory “primer” (Chapters 2-7), Chapter 8 transitions the musical discussions into a new set of chapters dedication to the notion a “musical genotype” (Chapter 8-15)—meaning the collective response (positive and negative) a listener has toward the universe of technical, sonic, and aesthetic dispositions of musical discourse. The chapter begins with a brief introduction to the genotype concept and its relationship to the varied types of experience one can have in a musical “day in the life”. In so doing, it sets up the protocol for the subsequent seven chapters: where in each case a fictional music lover proceeds through a “day in the life” listening to music informed by one of the seven musical “species” that dominantly informs his / her musical taste: pop, rock, jazz, hip hop, electronica, world, and classical. The chapter then concludes with side trip, necessary to prepare the subsequent genotype chapters, into the complex and often problematic topic of genre—divided into four tiers.
